Family Ties…It must be in the blood

One thing that has always fascinated me about professional football is finding out when a current or former NFL player has a relative who also played in the NFL. Example did you know that former Minnesota Vikings, WR Jake Reed and Kansas City Chiefs, CB Dale Carter where brothers? Did you know that Adalius Thomas and Justin Tuck are cousins? Or what about brothers, Gene and Scott Mruckowski, filling roster spots with the New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers. Maybe it’s just me but I always thought that was interesting information and sometimes helped understand why a guy signs with a certain team via free agency.

Here is this year’s addition of the We Are Family Tree:

Virginia’s Chris Long the likely #1 pick is the son of NFL Hall of Fame defensive lineman, Howie Long.

Minnesota safety, Dominique Barber is the brother of Dallas Cowboys, Marion Barber.

Washington State safety, Husain Abdullah is the brother of Denver Broncos safety Hamza Abdullah.

Texas safety, Marcus Griffin is the twin brother of Titans DB Michael Griffin.

Florida WR, Andre Caldwell brother is NFL player, Reche Caldwell.

Missouri TE, Martin Rucker is the brother to Carolina DE Mike Rucker.

Tennessee State CB, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, is the first cousin of Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

Oregon QB, Brady Leaf is the brother of former second pick of the entire draft, Ryan Leaf.

Arizona cornerback, Antoine Cason CB, is the brother to running back of the Detroit Lions, Aveion Cason.

Erin Henderson OLB from Maryland is the brother of Minnesota Vikings, E.J. Henderson.

Ali Highsmith OLB, from LSU is a cousin to former NFL player Alonzo Highsmith.

Bruce Davis OLB from UCLA is the son of former Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers OT, Bruce Davis.

Bo Ruud OLB Nebraska, is the younger brother of Tampa Bay Buccanners Barrett Ruud.

Simeon Castille FS Alabama, is the brother of current Arizona Cardinals, Tim Castille, and the son of former NFL Jeremiah Castille.

NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Round 1

With Free Agency starting in a week, I thought I’d break down the first three rounds of the draft. Team needs, best available athlete and possible connection of NFL teams to college programs where all taken into consideration. Please post your thoughts or email me directly at Patrick@footballdialogue.com

1. Miami Dolphins: Chris Long DE Virginia....Hard working player who played for a former Parcells associate, Al Groh, and has a Hall of Fame Dad in Howie Long. All of that adds up to a Bill Parcells type player.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jake Long OT MichiganNo team got decimated more with offensive line injuries than the Rams last year and its obvious Orlando Pace can’t play forever. Long will be the future leader of this group and should have a Pro Bowl career.

3. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan QB Boston College..Time to turn the page for this franchise and get a new identity. Ryan may not start from Day 1 but is the type of guy to lead this team back to respectability. (Granted some questionable hires so far haven’t instilled great confidence so far).

4. Oakland Raiders: Glenn Dorsey DT LSU …The perfect replacement for Warren Sapp. Dorsey gives them the player to build their defense around as they continue to try to become respectable again. (They may want to get a new owner too).

5. Kansas City: Ryan Clady OT Boise State …Chiefs needed to upgrade talent on the offensive line if they hope to get any kind of return on the Larry Johnson extension. Clady should be an instant starter.

6. NY Jets: Sedrick Ellis DT USC ..Mangini continues to tinker with the defense and needs a disruptive force up the middle for teams to think twice about trying to pound the ball down their throats. Ellis should create that force for them having started on a great USC defense and become a perennial Pro Bowler for many years for the Jets.

7. New England Patriots: Mike Jenkins CB South Florida …With Samuel and Gay free agents and no LBs warranting this pick, it makes it very easy for Bill to add this young talent to the secondary. Jenkins should be a starter no later than mid-season.

8. Baltimore Ravens: Brian Brohm QB Louisville …Need to give up on the Steve McNair and Kyle Boller years and start to groom someone to become a real QB for this team. Brohm is a smart QB who can make all the throws.

9. Cincinnati Bengals: Vernon Gholston DE Ohio State …Cincinnati knows they need to bring the heat and Gholston has only started to scratch his potential. Should be a great student for Marvin Lewis (hopefully Lewis will be in Cincinnati for more than the 2008 season).

10. New Orleans Saints: Leodis McKelvin CB Troy …Saints need to improve secondary and McKelvin is the next great thing coming from the University of Troy (see DeMarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora). McKelvin played well at the Senior Bowl and excels in special teams too.

11. Buffalo Bills: Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma….The perfect fit for the Bills. Kelly is that big target they desperately need to balance out Parrish, Reed, and Evans. Should have a huge impact on the offense early this season.

12. Denver Broncos: Chris Williams OT Vanderbilt…Broncos need to upgrade the offensive line to give Jay Cutler a fighting chance and adding Williams to the line will improve both the passing and running game.

13. Carolina Panthers: Derrick Harvey DE Florida…With Mike Rucker's career winding down (at least in Carolina) and Julius Peppers a major question mark, the Panthers can add a guy like Harvey to start and rebuild the defense around for the future.

14. Chicago Bears: Darren McFadden RB Arkansas If Dmac starts to slide this far a certain owner in TX may be burning up the phones. Assuming they stay here the Bears can add two-time Heisman runner up to the offense and move Cedric Benson back to the role as #2 tailback.

15. Detroit Lions: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB Tennessee State.. With the constant quest in the NFL for shut down corners the Lions would be wise to snatch up one of the hottest players this off-season. DRC performed well at the Senior Bowl and looks poised to jump into the first round.

16. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Stewart RB Oregon…...Suddenly Edgerrin James has been looking for old and JJ Arrington hasn't distinguished himself enough to be trusted. Stewart played in the spread offense at Oregon and can certainly be a dual threat and great addition to the offense.

17. Minnesota Vikings: DeSean Jackson WR California…Explosive player who will give them an outside threat for their offense and go great with ROY Adrian Peterson.

18. Houston Texans: Rashard Mendenhall RB Illinois…Need a #1 HR threat behind Schaub and since Ahman Green couldn’t stay healthy, landing Rashard at this spot is a steal and should help the offense significantly.

19. Philadelphia Eagles: Jeff Otah OT Pittsburgh…Philly is a hard team to predict but with the tackles getting older, adding a bodyguard for McNabb and Westbrook would be a nice addition.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: James Hardy WR Indiana…Checkered past might scare some teams but not Gruden. Hardy is a freak of talent and will bring an added dimension to the offense.

21. Washington Redskins: Calais Campbell DE Miami (Fla.) …Skins will be looking for a big wideout but a talent like Campbell is hard to pass up. Will alter passing game without even getting near the QB because of his long arms. He’s a basketball player playing football.

22. Dallas Cowboys: Felix Jones RB Arkansas…Jerry gets to make this call and jumps to add another Arkansas player to the roster. Perfect #2 to go with Barber and can help with the struggling special teams.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Anthony Collins OT Kansas..Steelers offensive line needs some new talent with Fancea and Starks likely leaving. Collins showed what he could do this season as he helped Kansas have their best season in several decades.

24. Tennessee Titans: Early Doucet WR LSU…..To fairly grade Vince Young you need to give him some real weapons and Doucet is the kind of guy that will be making the phrase “Vince Young has really stepped this season improving his accuracy” heard throughout network sports TV.

25. Seattle Seahawks: Sam Baker OT USC…The running game has struggled and the Seahawks need to improve the talent in front of the backs as much as they need a new back. Baker is a West Coast guy who got outstanding coaching college and contrary to some “experts” I think will be a starter early on.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars: Phillip Merling DE Clemson..Still need consistent pressure for the end and Merling is under the radar a little and should make an early appearance in the starting line up in Jacksonville.

27. San Diego Chargers: Kentwan Balmer DT North Carolina…SD could really go a lot of way with this pick but getting a guy like Balmer to rotate with the rest of the line will make running against SD that much tougher. (Remember NC coach Butch Davis and Norv Turner where on the Cowboys staff together).

28. Dallas Cowboys: Antoine Cason CB Arizona…Terrance Newman will be a free agent next year and Dallas is losing any depth behind him this off-season. Cason is a special talent who should make an immediate impact on the defense and special teams.

29. San Francisco 49’ers: Andre Caldwell WR Florida…Mike Martz needs wide receivers and Caldwell showed what he’s about at the Senior Bowl. Would be a steal at this point and a candidate for Rookie of the Year.

30. Green Bay Packers: Kenny Phillips FS Miami (Fla.)…GB needs to improve the secondary especially safety position and Phillips has show all characteristics to be a great QB for the defense.

31. NY Giants: Keith Rivers OLB USC…With Mitchell and Torbor free agents the G-Men will need to add some talent to the LB core. Rivers is a boom or bust player that the Giants can roll the dice with and if he plays close to his potential may be the steal of the first round.

NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Round 2

32. Miami Dolphins: Gosder Cherilus OT Boston College. Instant starter from day one. Battle tested and a cornerstone for the line to build around.

33. St. Louis Rams: Lawrence Jackson DE USC..Perfect player to line up next to last year’s #1 pick to give the defense some teeth.

34. Atlanta Falcons: Martellus Bennett TE Texas A&M….With Crumpler gone Martellus will be a starter from day 1.

35. Oakland Raiders: Mario Manningham WR Michigan….HR threat Al Davis loves.

36. Kansas City Chiefs: Aqib Talib CB Kansas…Mix reports on Talib some have higher than this spot but will start for KC.

37. NY Jets: Dan Connor ILB Penn State…Perfect addition to the Jets LB core. Smart player who won’t be caught out of position.

38. Baltimore Ravens: Quentin Groves OLB Auburn…Steal at this spot but because of injury history should be there when he selects.

39. San Francisco 49’ers: Carl Nicks OT Nebraska….Entire offense needs overhaul and Nicks is nearly starter ready level having had Callahan as his coach at Nebraska.

40. New Orleans Saints: Ali Highsmith OLB LSU..Great motor who will be a fan favorite.

41. Buffalo Bills: Reggie Smith CB Oklahoma…Buffalo just needs to stay the course and continue to add best available athletes with each pick. Smith should start in 2008.

42. Denver Broncos: Pat Sims DT Auburn…It’s about time the Broncos start to draft defensive lineman rather than continue to take from the scrap heap.

43. Carolina Panthers: Chad Henne QB Michigan….Will contend with Matt Moore as QB of the future.

44. Chicago Bears: Andre Woodson QB Kentucky..If they can get a good vet to sit in front for two years Woodson could be the answer for the next 12.

45. Detroit Lions: Chris Johnson RB East Carolina…Need a back to either replace or compliment Kevin Jones depending on his health.

46. Cincinnati Bengals: Fred Davis TE USC….Need to improve the “quality” of people on this roster and Davis is finally legit threat at TE for Carson Palmer.

47. Minnesota Vikings: Darrell Robertson DE Georgia Tech….With the reports of Kenechi Udeze situation this becomes a need pick. Robertson is a solid player who benefited from terrific coaching at Georgia Tech.

48. Atlanta Falcons: Red Bryant DT Texas A&M…Coach Smith gets him a man that will remind him of the big boys he left behind in Jacksonville.

49. Philadelphia Eagles: Charles Godfrey CB Iowa…Philly always seems to draft replacements a year before needed. Godfrey will be a nickel this year and take over one of the spots next season.

50. Arizona Cardinals: Cliff Avril OLB/DE Purdue….Avril is another young LB who would be perfect for the current regime to mold into a Pro Bowler in Arizona.

51. Washington Redskins: Devin Thomas WR Michigan State…The big WR they desperately need.

52. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Xavier Adibi OLB Virginia Tech…The defense is get old and Adibi could replace Derrick Brooks as the new ringleader for the unit.

53. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jamaal Charles RB Texas..Everyone knew when Willie Parker went down the Steelers where done. Charles would be a legit #2 threat and eventual starter.

54. Tennessee Titans: Terrell Thomas CB USC…Anytime Coach Fisher gets to add a USC player it’s a good day for him.

55. Seattle Seahawks: John Carlson TE Notre Dame…Another great addition to revamping the Seahawks offense. Carlson has had two years of NFL caliber coaching now at ND and should be a starter from day 1.

56. Cleveland Browns: Erin Henderson OLB Maryland…Browns need to get adding talent to the defense so every game doesn’t end up a shoot out.

57. Miami Dolphins: Trevor Laws DT Notre Dame…Another clog in the middle for the revamped Miami defense.

58. Jacksonville Jaguars: Limas Sweed WR Texas…With Wilford leaving via free agency and Matt Jones possibly being cut the Jags need to add another big target. Sweed fits that role and just needs to stay healthy.

59. Indianapolis Colts: Brandon Albert OG Virginia…Appears the Colts will have an opening at one of the guard position and Albert is a nice prospect who can be groomed into an eventual starter.

60. Green Bay Packers: Tracy Porter CB Indiana…Porter will be a nice player to groom to replace Al Harris.

61. Dallas Cowboys: Donnie Avery WR Houston…Terry Glenn’s career may be over and Avery is that threat the team missed last year. Steal at this point.

62. New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo ILB Tennessee…Pats need to improve the linebackers on this team. Mayo should be a contributor to both the defense and special teams.

63. NY Giants: Simeon Castille FS Alabama…While the Giants caught fire in the playoffs they were still a team that got beat during the season by the Packers, Patriots and twice by Dallas due to an average secondary. Castile will be the new QB of the secondary.

NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Round 3

64. Miami Dolphins: Earl Bennett WR Vanderbilt..Parcells likes smart players who will do their job and not embarrass him or the franchise. Bennett is a player who has yet to reach his potential but could be a starter by the end of the season.

65. St. Louis Rams: Mike Pollak C Arizona St.....The Rams could to built up the depleted offensive line.

66. Kansas City Chiefs: Roy Schuening OG Oregon State…Similar to the Rams, KC needs new bodies on the 0-line.

67. New England Patriots: Bruce Davis OLB UCLA…Time to stock pile some replacements for the aging LBs.

68. Atlanta Falcons: Steve Slaton RB West Virginia…Warrick Dunn’s eventual replacement.

69. NY Jets: Ray Rice RB Rutgers….Should work well with Thomas Jones to create a two headed monster in NY. Popular pick with the Jets faithful.

70. San Francisco 49’ers: Marcus Howard OLB Georgia…Need to improve talent base and with the cutting of Derek Smith, linebacker now because a bigger need.

71. Buffalo Bills: Martin Rucker TE Missouri….Smart, talent player who shared the spotlight with Coffman at Missouri but should flourish in the NFL. Mike Rucker’s brother.

72. Buffalo Bills: Dre Moore DT Maryland…Big guy to fill up the middle on the defense.

73. Minnesota Vikings: Joe Flacco QB Delaware…Won’t push to start year 1 but may be the long term answer at QB.

74. Carolina Panthers: Eddie Royal WR Virginia Tech..Dual threat that has great speed but had only average senior season.

75. Chicago Bears: Heath Newberry OT Newberry…Small school prospect that could develop into something special.

76. Detroit Lions: Kendall Langford DE Hampton…Another small school talent that would be a nice fit for the Lions defensive scheme.

77. Cincinnati Bengals: Shawn Crable OLB Michigan…This team needs linebackers and a big time Big Ten LB is a nice addition.

78. New Orleans Saints: Tavares Gooden ILB Miami…Very under-rated prospect who will work well for Coach Payton.

79. Houston Texans: Brandon Flowers CB Virginia Tech….A player who should be starting by 2009 but will be a great addition to nickel packages and certainly special teams.

80. Philadelphia Eagles: Johnny Dingle DE West Virginia…Need Defensive Ends with Kearse and Howard leaving. Dingle has great skills and should adapt quickly to Jim Johnson’s scheme.

81. Arizona Cardinals: DeJuan Tribble CB Boston College…Up and down senior season but should become a starter early in his career.

82. Minnesota Vikings: Jermichael Finley TE Texas…Vikings need better weapons to be able to get a fair assessment of any QB and Finley gives them a legit TE target.

83. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Matt Forte’ RB Tulane….Nice pick for Tampa. Replace Mike Alstott in a lot of sets.

84. Washington Redskins: Oniel Cousins OT UTEP…Skins need some youth on the offensive line. Cousins can be groomed to replace Jansen down the road.

85. Tennessee Titans: Kevin Smith RB Central Florida..Steal this late but should become a dependable starter for the Titans. Could be a special player.

86. Seattle Seahawks: Frank Okam DT Texas…Need that big guy up the middle. Just need to make sure he’s motivated.

87. Cleveland Browns: Chris Ellis DE Virginia Tech..Keep adding to the defense. Ellis has a great motor and should play quite a bit his rookie season.

88. Pittsburgh Steelers: John Sullivan C Notre Dame.. As noted before Steelers need to improve the offensive line. Sullivan had the advantage of top coaching and should start early.

89. Jacksonville Jaguars: Dwight Lowery CB San Jose State..Always need depth at CB.

90. Chicago Bears: Phillip Wheeler ILB Georgia Tech…With Briggs moving on the Bears will need to add another LB to their core group.

91. Green Bay Packers: John Greco OT Toledo…Can play guard and should see action often in his rookie season.

92. Dallas Cowboys: Marcus Griffin FS Texas…Great addition at this point and should replace Keith Davis in a lot sets and on special teams.

93. Indianapolis Colts: Geno Hayes OLB Florida State…Colts always looking to upgrade defense and Hayes is the perfect fit for Dungy’s system.

Free Agency Forecast

Now that we have probably reach the only real dead period in the NFL, I thought I’d take a stab at who might go where in free agency. I took the following factors into consideration: current cap space for each team, the likelihood that a player reaches free agency (i.e. Suggs, Moss, Flozell Adams and other being franchised), team needs and outside connections to that team or area (hometowns, position coaches, etc). Again this was done for fun to fill in the time until real free agency starts.

(This order is listed from the most cap room to the least)

UPDATED: Jordan Gross will be franchised which changed the Dolphins and Vikings signings. Seattle signed Mike Wahle so now they go tight end.

1. San Diego Chargers: Alan Faneca OG Pittsburgh. Little to no chance Alan returns to Pittsburgh and San Diego having so much cap space could afford the luxury of this talented player.

2. Tennessee Titans: Asante Samuel CB New England. Titans need wide receivers and cornerbacks with the chance to cut ties with Pacman and replace him with a playoff warrior like Samuel the Titans would be silly not to look into it.

3. Miami Dolphins: Max Starks OT Pittsburgh. With the pending news of Jordan Gross getting slapped with the franchise tag Miami will now turn its direction to Max Starks. A mountain of man who could have a similar career to another pupil of Tony Sparano, Flozell Adams of the Cowboys.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jerry Porter WR Oakland…With Ernest Wilford moving on (see below) via free agency, Matt Jones likely getting cut and not sure if you could trust Dennis Northcutt, this would be a real nice addition to team with Reggie Williams next season.

5. Buffalo Bills: Ernest Wilford WR Jacksonville..The Bills desperately need a wide out taller than 5-10 and Wilford is underrated and should be within the budget of the always financially strapped Bills.

6. New Orleans Saints: Corey Williams DT Green Bay. The Packers sound as if they will not franchise the big fella and the Saints have the space literally and financially to fit Williams in as a starter for the next 5-7 years.

7. Cincinnati Bengals: Kawika Mitchell LB NY Giants ..I don’t think a team has ever had more issues in a season with linebackers than the Bengals did last year. Mitchell is fresh from starting in the Super Bowl and wants the security of a multi-year deal. The Bengals need a talent influx at that position and can use some solid successful players on this roster.

8. San Francisco 49’ers: Lance Briggs LB Chicago. Briggs days are likely over in Chicago and wants to go somewhere where he’ll be the man. After losing out on Adalius Thomas last year the 49’ers shouldn’t let this guy get away.

9. Cleveland Browns: Maake Kemoeatu NT Carolina. The Browns defense is in-flux and could use a run stopper the size of Ted Washington in his prime. Maake is just that type of guy and should welcome the chance to join a playoff caliber team in Cleveland.

10. Arizona Cardinals: Michael Turner RB San Diego. Edgerrin James has looked rather old the past two seasons and JJ Arrington has not offered the balance attack they had hoped for when he was drafted. Now they will try to rein Turner. By 2009 the Cards will look like the Cowboys current backfield with Turner getting 70% of the carries and James 30 percent.

11. NY Jets: Bryant Johnson WR Arizona. Jets need some more weapons and while Johnson is stuck behind Boldin and Fitzgerald, he has talent and is a smart player (former PSU) who should endear himself to the coaching staff rather early with his excellent routes, good hands and a quiet mouth.

12. Oakland Raiders: Bernard Berrian WR Chicago. Berrian is looking to go West and be “the man”. The chance he’ll be given in Oakland should take care of both of those desires and give Al Davis the HR threat he loves.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: D.J. Hackett WR Seattle. When Ike Hilliard and Joey Galloway start for you in the playoffs you need to get younger. Hackett is sharing the ball with many in Seattle but should be able to get out of town and become a star in Tampa Bay.

14. NY Giants: Calvin Pace LB Arizona. Torbor and Mitchell are both free agents and could both leave. Pace is a slightly bigger LB and should excel in the schemes in NY.

15. Detroit Lions: Jake Scott OG Indy. The Lions need to improve their line and adding a guy from the group that protects Peyton would be a step in the right direction.

16. Houston Texans: Drayton Florence CB San Diego The Texans defense is improving but you can never have enough quality corners. Florence is looking to be a starter from day 1 and get paid that way. The Texans should be able to handle both parts of that request.

17. Dallas Cowboys: Randall Gay CB New England ..With the likely resigning of Flozell, Ken Hamlin, Marion Barber and Chris Canty, the Cowboys won’t be able to make that “big splash” Jerry likes to do but you could do a lot worse then settle for Randall Gay. He’s a very solid 3rd corner who could become a FS once they move Roy Williams and Hamlin becomes the SS.

18. Kansas City Chiefs: Jeff Faine C New Orleans. Chiefs need to get stronger up the middle and Faine is looking for a new line to anchor. This would be a great addition and be amazing how suddenly the QB looks better with Jeff Faine on the roster.

19. Chicago Bears: Julius Jones RB Dallas ..Bears learned a hard lesson after they traded Thomas Jones…The lesson was Cedric Benson can’t carry the load alone. Lucky for them Thomas’s little brother is available and should fill a similar role.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers: Musa Smith RB Baltimore. Was just me or when Parker went down did everyone know Pittsburgh was done. Well if they can get Musa to stay healthy he would give them a terrific two headed monster in Pittsburgh. Very talented just hasn’t had the chance to get on the field. Perfect bargain player for the Steelers.

21. Green Bay Packers: Gibril Wilson S NY Giants. Packers need an upgrade at safety and adding Wilson gives them a young talented playoff test leader for their secondary. Harris and Woodson are getting older so Wilson would eventually be the leader of that group.

22. Philadelphia Eagles: Antwan Odom DE Tennessee. Philly is looking replace Jevon Kearse, Jerome McDougle and Darren Howard and Antwan would be a great player to team with Trent Cole for the next six or seven years. Granted of any team, Philly is the most difficult to predict when it comes to anything.

23. Denver Broncos: Clark Haggans LB Pittsburgh. Broncos need to upgrade at OLB and Haggans is the type of veteran who can come in and be an instant success in Denver. After escaping the financially frugal Steelers, Haggans will get a big payday and a chance to be a difference maker for the Broncos D.

24. Minnesota Vikings: Bobby McCray DE Jacksonville. With the disturbing news regarding Kenechi Udeze, the Vikings would be wise to add a player such as McCray who can help with the pass rush and at 26 still have room to improve his game.

25. New England Patriots: Boss Bailey LB Detroit. Had a great season that didn’t end that way but it did show that they need some youth at LB and Bailey would be an absolute steal for the Pats. Unlimited talent who would explode in the NFL world under Bill “Steven Spielberg” Belichick.

26. St. Louis Rams: Jacques Reeves CB Dallas. While the Reeves had only a slightly better than average year in Dallas, he would be a major addition to the porous secondary in St. Louis. Little chance Dallas brings him back but would serve as a dependable starter and upgrade for the Rams.

27. Seattle Seahawks: Ben Troupe TE Tennessee…With the recent addition of Mike Wahle at guard the Seahawks should turn their focus to the need for an upgrade at tight end. Troupe is far from the complete tight end but is a solid blocker and should help the running game and pass protection. Look for them to add a young offensive threat in the draft at this position.

28. Indianapolis Colts: Damien Woody G Detroit. They will need to replace Jake Scott and Woody would give them a solid veteran who can play multiple positions if needed.

29. Carolina Panthers: George Foster T Detroit ..Another team that likely will have a new coach in place when the 2009 season starts but until then they will need to fill the whole created by Jordan Gross’s expected departure.

30. Atlanta Falcons: Jesse Chatman RB Miami ..The franchise that likely had the second worse off-season so far (look at team #32 for that distinction) and will likely be looking to replace Warrick Dunn and that’s where a guy like Jesse Chatman fits perfect. A guy that gives you a 120% ever time out and can be used almost identical to how they use Dunn.

31. Baltimore Ravens: Na’il Diggs LB Carolina ..A team with little cap room especially after franchising Terrell Suggs but adding Diggs gives them some nice depth at linebacker. Diggs is one of the most under-rated players and should fit in nicely. Should the Ravens open up some cap space they may make a run at a QB (that’s if there is one on the market).

32. Washington Redskins: Victor Hobson LB NY Jets ..The Redskins linebacking core is getting old and at 28, Hobson will give them a great option at OLB and possible MLB down the road. Plus don’t the Redskins always raid the Jets. One other note…..Does Danny Snyder have any idea how to run a franchise??

Well, there you have it a Mock Free Agency. How many other blogs or sites have the guts to try to figure something like this out. Love to hear your feedback so drop me a line at Canes612@comcast.net

The Calm Before the Storm of Free Agency

Well now that the games are officially over we can move to what some think is the best time of the year...the off-season. At least now everyone's record is 0-0 again and each fan has the hope their team will make the right moves this time of year.

Here is the latest on player movement and potential movement:

Lance Briggs going to D.C?

Hotel staying open in Dallas

Daunte’s return to Miami

Holt on the market?

Sad News in Minnesota

Could Wahle join the Tuna?

Fassel thinks he’ll coach again..yeah maybe in Oakland.

Want Ad: Wide Receiver needed in Miami

Bears aren’t hibernating their busy

Sleeper QB Prospect looking to get better

Doesn’t this team have a salary cap?

Well, those are the stories of note that caught my eye. Can't wait until we get through the boring month of February and start real player movement.

Post Super Bowl Thoughts

• Is it just me but weren't you glad to see the final results Sunday. Personally, I think New England accepted all the praise and glory of their season a little too easily and started to believe they were the best team ever and just needed to show up to win. Sorry guys (and most of ESPN) you are a very talented team for the current free agency/salary cap ages but not quite in the same class with the 70's Steelers, 80's 49'ers or 90's Cowboys. Also, I find it pretty amazing that suddenly the Pats had so many injuries that no one knew about. Something tells me if they did win ...no one would still no about those injuries.

• While I am guilty of it myself, I can't help but think of how it's a little crazy to already have a mock done as free agency will change it drastically. I understand the occasional mock done for something to read and discuss during the long time we wait until the actual day but what bugs we is the guys who do 10 to 12 first round mocks then have the nerve to brag after the draft all the picks they got right. What!!!! Anyone can do that if they produce enough mocks. Anything more than one every two to three weeks is a little silly if you ask me.

• I can certainly respect Senator Specter's intention to ask the NFL what really happened to Spy Gate tapes I think it's a football matter and not a political and certainly hope as Rotoworld suggest that Comcast is his second biggest campaign contributor and everyone knows that Comcast and the NFL aren't playing well together. Let's hope it's not a self-serving pursuit by Senator Specter.

• If I'm NY Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, I take a page out of Jason Garrett's playbook and realize that I'm a coordinator one year and my team is a lot better than the team that's pursuing me for the head coach position and stay with the Giants. If the Giants have similar success next year he'll get another crack but sit tight and enjoy the Super Bowl and work at the repeat. Do you really want to work for Snyder?

• Nation Signing Day tomorrow. Isn't it awesome how much this country loves the great football. Hopefully your teams get the guys you want. One additional comment on tomorrow if I’m Terrelle Pryor, I’m headed to Michigan as you will start as a freshman and be a Heisman candidate from Day 1. (Trust me he’s as good as advertised as I saw him beat my old High School for a State Title this year).

• Some coaching moves of note: Former SMU HC Phil Bennett going to University of Pittsburgh as defensive coordinator. Nice to see him get a chance to continue his career. Don’t want to sit out too many seasons if you hope to stay in the game. Gregg Williams according to reports is the new Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator. That’s great that he lands on his feet and takes over an already great defense.

• A few random thoughts…Michael Strahan while it’s a nice idea to come back I wouldn’t risk it. Ride off into the sunset like Elway and enjoy winning the last game you’ll ever play. Nice move Matt Roth! That should get you a spot for the year in the Tuna’s doghouse. It didn’t take long for Randy Moss’s true colors to return. I’d say it is 50-50 he comes back. McNabb to Baltimore is an interesting story to watch. If I’m the Ravens I try to develop my own QB once and for all and quit taking vets to fill the spot but would make for an interesting story to watch this upcoming season.

Friday Night Lights--The Best Drama on TV

Until recently, I was like many of you; I heard great things about this show but never sat down and watched a full episode. Honestly, I couldn't remember what day it was on; since NBC seemed to make a practice of changing its time slot like they were playing a game of three card Monte. Plus, I wondered if it could really be as good as the movie. Well, thanks to the magic of TIVO, I can enthusiastically state that this series is even better than the movie (probably only time besides M.A.S.H that can that be said). The way it makes football the glue that ties the whole town together is just truly amazing. I cannot say enough great things about the acting, directing and especially the writing! This is not only a great show for the present time, it's a classic show that ranks with the best dramas of all time -- with the likes of NYPD Blue, Law and Order, and The Sopranos. I only wish they had a show like this when I was in high school going through some of the same stuff they so eloquently tackle on a weekly basis. The acting job Klye Chandler and Connie Britton do as Coach and as parents to seemingly the entire team is truly one for the ages; just wish my high school coach was like Coach Taylor as I may have been inspired to have gone out for the team. I highly recommend everyone (especially families with teenagers) to make time to get hooked on Friday Night Lights. It will be time well spent together as a family, and it tackles real issues like teenage sex, rape, underage drinking, the War in Iraq, steroid use, and countless others in a real world way and not a soap box manner that so many other shows fall victim to on TV today. My only wish is for NBC to pull the plug on ER and give "Must See TV" a show worthy of being labeled "Must See TV". Pairing two shows like The Office and Friday Nights Lights would bring back the days of Seinfeld and ER (when it was a fresh cutting edge show) and make Thursdays a great night for NBC again.
