Random Weekend Thoughts

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  Busy but a lot of fun.   Is it me or does it take forever for football season to get here but it seems to be over in about 12 minutes?  Enjoy it before you know it will all be waiting for the draft.   Anyway thoughts from this weekend.

  1. You would have to think with how fast Miami fired Randy Shannon they must have someone in mind.   I mean any earlier and it would have been at the half.   Don't feel too bad for Randy he can take a year off and then pick his next job whether it be HC at lower D1 school, as a defensive coordinator or maybe move back to the pro ranks and join a new staff.  Either way Randy is too good a person to not learn from this and have continued success.   Rumors regarding his replacement at Miami are all over the board but if I were there AD Doogie Howser my calls would be first (assuming Gruden is out) to Mario Cristobal at FIU,  next to Al Golden at Temple and then Jeff Tedford and Dan Mullen.   College football is better when teams like Miami, Notre Dame, Penn State and few others are top 10 programs not top 30.   It's your move Miami!!
  2. Keeping working hard Buffalo.  The wins will come...soon.  A good draft this year and Buffalo could be a .500 team next year without much of  a stretch.
  3. The next time Cortland it might be worse.  Why not play like a man instead of an idiot?
  4. Is it me or is their no clear cut Super Bowl team.  Philly gets beat by Chicago, New Orleans needs and act of Roy to pull that out, if God wasn't against Stevie Johnson (lol) the Steelers would have lost and the Pats are up and down.  Seriously a favorite?  Anyone?
  5. Cam Newton think Daunte Culpepper but better. Plus he won't have that big of an adjustments when he signs his contract after already getting paid this season to play at Auburn.
  6. It might be me but Alabama is truly building a dynasty down there that will rival what USC and Miami had in previous years.
  7. Think Urban Meyer wished he didn't change his mind last year?  I don't I think so but I expect a complete staff redo with a lot of these unemployed head coaches landing on his staff to coach and recruit like crazy.  Hmmm maybe Randy Shannon can change colors after all Mark Richt did years ago.
  8. I heard something I never thought I would today from some die hard PSU fans.  They all want Joe to hang it up.  Maybe a retirement day is order.  Come on Joe just say effective the end of the 2014 season I'm done.  They can promote Bradley like FSU did with Fisher in waiting.  Just a thought.
  9. Hope everyone is watching Friday Night Lights.  What a shame that show ends this year!!!
  10. When it's all said and done I think Minnesota and Dallas already have their new head coaches.

Paul Hornung Award

Created by the Louisville Sports Commission, the Paul Hornung Award is designed to recognize versatile, high-level performers in major college football and help preserve the legacy of one of Kentucky's best known athletes. A panel of experts will select the inaugural winner in early January 2011; the votes will be tabulated by Dean Dorton Allen Ford. The winner will be honored at the Paul Hornung Award Banquet presented by Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine January 25 at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville. Hornung is considered by many the best all-around player in the history of college and pro football. He won the 1956 Heisman Trophy at quarterback for Notre Dame and was the No. 1 pick in the 1957 NFL draft. He played every position in the backfield during his career with the Irish, where he also punted, kicked, returned kicks and played defensive back and was a multi-threat offensive back and prolific kicker in the pros. He was a member of four NFL championship teams as an all-pro halfback for the Green Bay Packers and led the NFL in scoring 1959-60-61, set the single season scoring record in 1960 with 176 points and was named League MVP following the 1961 season. Legendary Packers Coach Vince Lombardi called Hornung, "The most versatile man ever to play the game." Paul is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and resides in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.  More information go towww.paulhornungaward.com.

MISSISSIPPI STATE NOMINATED FOR DISCOVER ORANGE BOWL COURAGE AWARD

DALLAS (FWAA) - The Mississippi State football team is the weekly nominee for the2010 Discover Orange Bowl Courage Award, to be announced at the end of the season by the Football Writers Association of America.

The Bulldogs are dealing with the tragic death of a teammate earlier this month.

Nick Bell, 20, a sophomore defensive end from Bessemer, Ala., died Nov. 2 after a brief battle with cancer. Bell had played in the Bulldogs' first four games, starting two, but after experiencing headaches and weakness in a hand, doctors found a mass on Bell's brain. The diagnosis was synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Bell underwent surgery Oct. 1. Doctors were hopeful Bell would return to football after treatment was completed. Wearing a camouflage hat, he watched Mississippi State's win over UAB from the sidelines Oct. 23. But before chemotherapy could begin, his health worsened.

When Bell noticed he couldn't touch his thumb to his index finger and his vision was blurry, he was rushed to the hospital Oct. 31 for emergency surgery to remove another mass from his brain, according to the Birmingham News. Buses from Starkville, Miss., carried more than 50 teammates and coaches to the Birmingham, Ala., hospital, but Bell did not regain consciousness.

"We grabbed a bus and loaded up a bunch of guys," coach Dan Mullen told the Associated Press. "I think it's great that a lot of our players got to go over there, see the situation and get to say their goodbyes."

His teammates have persevered. Despite losing both games (to ranked opponents Alabama and Arkansas) since his death, Mississippi State is 7-4 heading into the annual "Egg Bowl" battle with in-state rival Mississippi.

The school has honored Bell's life in several ways. At last Saturday's home game with Arkansas, Bell's mother, Linda, ended an emotional pregame ceremony with MSU's greatest tradition, raising a cowbell above her head. The MSU marching band honored Bell with a formation that spelled out "36," his jersey number. Each 36-yard line was painted black rather than the traditional white, and the number 36 was painted on the field inside a maroon-and-white circle.

The Bulldogs are wearing patches with Bell's name and number on their jerseys. Against Arkansas, tight end Kendrick Cook wore Bell's jersey number.

"Nick lived his life like a champion and will always be remembered in our hearts that way," Mullen said in a statement released by the school. "During this impossible time, we pray for Nick's family and all those he has touched."

Behind the Scenes

I am a die-hard football fan, first and foremost, who believes the best time of the year runs from late August until the NFL Draft Weekend.   After that, it’s a little NBA action, but mainly vacation time from sports until training camp starts up in July.  I stopped following baseball religiously once the strike canceled the World Series, and baseball refused some sort of cap to keep a certain New York team from buying the best players, but continually celebrates them as some sort of dynasty.  Maybe fifty years ago it was true, but now they are simply the best team money can buy.  Anyway like most sports fans in America, football is my passion, but it’s not without its flaws, or should I say without areas where change is needed.

Here is my growing list of what I would like to see changed (in no particular order):

  1. Rotate the location of the NFL Draft.  Since East Coast and smaller market areas will never have a chance to host a Super Bowl, why not bring the NFL Draft, (a ratings juggernaut itself) to fans throughout the country, not just New York?  My suggestion is to rotate it every two years, with the cities presenting bids similar to the Super Bowl, but getting the chance to host for two years consecutively.  Spread the wealth around and let the fans from the whole country have the chance to come and watch the draft.   Imagine the draft in Green Bay, Buffalo, Kansas City or Pittsburgh.  They have some of the best football fans in the country, why not let them enjoy the draft in their city. If the league was really thinking, they could make it a whole NFL Experience type of event with such things as punt, pass and kick events, a chance to get autographs from the rookies from the previous season, and they could even raffle off the chance to announce a team’s pick in a later round.   They could use that money to benefit the retired players’ medical fund.  Think a season ticket holder would relish the chance to announce their team’s pick in round 3 or 4?

Around the League 11/22

Former NFL Scout, Russ Lande, shares some insight on some current prospects

It's a new dawn in Minnesota as Chilly is out and here come Frazier.

Tough loss for Giants' Nicks as he looks close to become an unstoppable force.

Hopefully this news puts Romo on the shelf (I.R) and Dallas can get him ready for 2011 (if there is a season).

Could Portis be elsewhere in 2011? (if there is a season).

Stock up..stock down as we inch closer to the NFL Draft.

If you want to read one of the best young guns in the business you need to check out Wes Bunting.  Move over McShay and Kiper.

2010 OUTLAND TROPHY FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

DALLAS (FWAA) – Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi, Florida State offensive guard Rodney Hudson and Colorado offensive tackle Nate Solder have been named finalists for the 65th Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football by the Football Writers Association of America.

The winner of the Outland Trophy will be announced on the evening of Dec. 9 during "The Home Depot College Football Awards Show" at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The show, hosted by Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, airs from 7-9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Carimi, a 6-7, 327-pound senior from Cottage Grove, Wis., has been a stalwart at left tackle for Wisconsin since taking over for 2006 Outland Trophy winner Joe Thomas at the beginning of the 2007 season. He has started 47 games in four seasons for the Badgers (10-1), who will conclude the 2010 regular season Saturday against Northwestern. Carimi was a part of a dominating offensive line in the Badgers' 83-20 defeat of Indiana when running back John Clay was sidelined with an injury. Carimi and the rest of the Wisconsin line were co-Badger Offensive Players of Week in a 41-23 victory over Minnesota this season. Carimi is one of the main reasons Wisconsin is 12th in the nation in rushing and in the hunt for a Rose Bowl berth heading into the final week of the regular season.

Hudson, a 6-2, 282-pound senior from Mobile, Ala., has a chance to be in a select group of Atlantic Coast Conference players. Presumably, he will be named All-ACC for the fourth straight season and will become the seventh player in ACC history to be so named. He has played all three positions on the offensive line – center, guard and tackle – during his career. Hudson also appears to be headed to a second straight Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which is awarded annually by ACC head coaches and defensive coordinators to the most outstanding blocker in the conference. He has been the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week twice this season. Despite injuries to several members of the Seminole offensive line this season, Hudson has been one of the main reasons Florida State has been able to run the ball effectively on its way to an 8-3 record.

Solder, a 6-9, 315-pound senior from Buena Vista, Colo., is also a finalist for the National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy, considered the "Academic Heisman." He graduated last May with a degree in biology and is a three-time first-team All-Big 12 selection. He is now taking post-graduate courses in integrative physiology. He is the team captain of the Buffaloes, who are 5-6 and playing Nebraska this Friday to become bowl eligible, despite a season in which there has been an in-season coaching change. Solder is the main reason CU's rushing game has been effective.

The Outland Trophy, which has been awarded annually by the FWAA since 1946, is named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century. The Outland Trophy is the third-oldest award in major college football behind the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award.

The official 2010 award presentation will be Jan. 13, 2011, in Omaha, Neb., at a banquet sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee. That group will present an Outland Trophy to a yet-to-be-named former winner at the banquet.

The Outland Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The NCFAA was founded in 1997 as a coalition of the major collegiate football awards to protect, preserve and enhance the integrity, influence and prestige of the game's predominant awards. The NCFAA encourages professionalism and the highest standards for the administration of its member awards and the selection of their candidates and recipients. He was a member of four NFL championship teams as an all-pro halfback for the Green Bay Packers and led the NFL in scoring 1959-60-61, set the single season scoring record in 1960 with 176 points and was named League MVP following the 1961 season.
